Combat Boots as Hiking Boots: A Surprising Alternative

Hiking can be a grueling and physically demanding activity, which is why having the right gear is essential. Footwear is especially important as it provides support and protection for your feet, especially during long hikes. While traditional hiking boots are a popular choice, combat boots have emerged as a surprising and practical choice for many, including myself. Granted, combat boots are not typically marketed as hiking boots, but they can be a great alternative for those looking for a durable and sturdy option on the trail. Here are some reasons why combat boots are my favorite when it comes to long grueling hikes.

Why Combat Boots Make Good Hiking Boots:

Durability: Combat boots are designed to withstand rough terrain and harsh conditions. They are made from high-quality materials and are built to last, which makes them ideal for hiking. The sturdy construction of combat boots helps protect your feet from rocks, sticks, and other obstacles you may encounter on the trail. When I was in the military, we “rucked” (an extreme version of backpacking) everywhere and combat boots always withstood the harshest conditions.

Water-Resistant: Combat boots are often made with waterproof materials, which makes them ideal for hiking in wet or muddy conditions. They help keep your feet dry and comfortable, even in the wettest conditions.

Comfort: Combat boots are designed for extended use, which means they are often built with comfort in mind. They typically have padded collars, cushioned insoles, and supportive footbeds that help reduce fatigue and prevent blisters. When I hike, I love to run and combat boots provide the feel of sneakers and the durability of boots.

Traction and support: Combat boots are designed to provide excellent traction on a variety of surfaces, which makes them ideal for hiking on slippery or uneven terrain. The durable outsole provides excellent grip, which helps prevent slips and falls. They also provide extra support around your ankles, so if you’re someone who rolls and twists ankles easily, this may be an ideal option for you.

My currents boots

To sum it up, combat boots make excellent hiking boots due to their durability, water-resistance, comfort, and traction. They provide all the support and protection your feet need during a hike, and they look great too! I personally prefer wearing combat boots when I hike, so if you're looking for a practical and stylish alternative to traditional hiking boots, consider a pair of combat boots for your next hike!
